Alpha Lipoic Acid as an aid to weight loss

alpha lipoic acid weight loss

Alpha lipoic acid is a supplement known already able to control the level of sugar in the blood and reduce the symptoms of diabetes such as neuropathic pain. A study published in the American Journal of Medicine states that alpha lipoic acid may also help obese people to lose weight.
The study, conducted in South Korea, including 360 obese people, some of which are also subject to high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol levels. These were given dietary instructions to reduce your caloric intake by 600 calories per day, with 55 and 60% of calories from carbohydrates, 20-25% from fat and 15-20% from protein.

After subjected to the diet for four weeks, people were divided into three groups:

  • The first group took 1,800 mg of alpha lipoic acid daily (600 mg three times daily),
  • The second group took 1,200 mg (400 mg three times a day),
  • The third group received a placebo substance.

The dietary program and integration of Alpha Lipoic Acid lasted 20 weeks.

When the researchers likened the weight of the three groups, noted the following:

  • The first group lost a significant amount of weight compared to the group that took the placebo substance.
  • The second group lost more weight than the group who took the placebo substance but the difference was not significant.
  • About 22% of people in the first group lost at least 5% of their body weight, and only 10% of the other two groups lost about 5% of their body weight.

The most common side effect among those who consume alpha lipoic acid, is an allergic skin reaction that leads to itching and in some cases skin eruptions, but only four people withdrew from the study due to this reason.
